Too Foolish Too Often

Psalm 14 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD? There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous. You would shame the plans of the poor, but the LORD is his refuge. Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

It is the fool who says in his heart, “There is no God.”

Such fools ignore God’s good and gracious commands, counsel, principles, and wisdom.

Such fools become a light and a guide to themselves. They then do that which is right in their own eyes. They do that which is corrupt, abominable, and evil.

Such fools abound here, there, and everywhere. Yes, the earth is full of such fools. All men and women prove folly to be their natural default mode. God knows and declares, “There is none who does good … They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.” According to God’s verdict, you and I are not the exceptions to this rule.

Such fools are dangerous. Since they will not pray and call upon the Lord, and since they have no knowledge and make their decisions in accordance with their own depraved hearts and minds, they “eat up” their neighbors. Great harm is done to family and friends, and such fools especially terrorize and devour those who are the Messiah’s people.

Now it is true, such fools have their day in the sunshine. For a while it seems all is well with and for them. They seem to thrive without the “crutch” or religion. However, their confidence is a farce, and their day of reckoning is coming closer with each revolution around the sun. And when they have their appointment on the day of judgment, there they will be in great terror. Why? For God is with the righteous. The Lord is the refuge of the righteous, and these friends will be found to be foolish, abominable, corrupt, and not good.

The same will not be true for fools who repent, believe, and submit to Yahweh, the Lord, or the Great I Am. Jesus Christ is the one who brought salvation out of the middle-eastern Jerusalem. He is the one who brings salvation out of the Heavenly Jerusalem. He is the one who restores the fortune of his people and causes them to rejoice and forever be glad.

Therefore friends, how might I encourage us to apply this text and teaching?

For those who find themselves to be atheistic fools, for those who who think, live, and die as if God does not exist, please humble yourselves before your Creator, Sustainer, Judge, and only possible Savior. Abundant and eternal life is before you now. It will not be offered forever. Why live another moment as the sovereign in your own life? Learn from God’s Word. Bow before the Father. Confess you faith in Jesus Christ, and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Come on friends and join the merry band of Christian fools. His house is full of fools, and yet his house is not yet filled. There is room for a few more. There is room for you.

For those who find themselves to be Christian fools, for those like me in whom the Holy Spirit dwells and yet we continue to think and live as if our God does not dominate and love, let us turn from our heart-folly and mental-stupidity. Let us repent and choose wisdom.

Let’s chose wisdom and remember our Sovereign God who has loved us from before the creation of the world.

Let’s chose wisdom and remember our Sovereign God who has loved us from his birth at Bethlehem to his crucifixion on a hill outside the ancient city of Jerusalem.

Let’s chose wisdom and remember our Sovereign God who continues to love us from the throne of God above — in the Heavenly Jerusalem. God continues to have nothing for us other than unwavering, always present, always watching, always caring, always wise, and always controlling love. Yes, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have red-hot and jealous affection for us. He exists, and we are his favorites.

Let’s chose wisdom and remember our Sovereign God, in the person of Jesus Christ, is patiently sitting on pins and needles. He is looking our way and anxiously waiting for the day when Abba Father says to him, “Son, go see your friends, go rescue your children; go get your bride!” Then, on that glorious day, salvation will again come from Jerusalem — God’s Heavenly Jerusalem. Love will be displayed, faith will be made sight, eternal fortune, joy, and gladness will be ours, and we will be fools no more.

  1. Every cult makes the same baseless claim, that those outside the cult are “fools”. Unsurprisingly, they can’t show their claims are true.

Each christian claims that only their version of this god is the right one, and thus we have many versions of “good and gracious commands, counsel, principles, and wisdom.”. Curious how you all can’t even agree on what morals your god wants. Taht not one of you can do what jesus promised, it seems that, per your own bible, you are all frauds.

    1. Thanks for writing back.

Everyone makes judgments. Everyone consider certain people and teaching “wise,” and contrary people and teachings to be “foolish.”

I think that is exactly what you are doing. You are questioning the “wisdom” of my post and considering whether or not it might be “foolish.”

So, what is the basis of what you think to be “wise” or “foolish?” (I do not know the answer for you.)

And, what is the basis of what cultists believe to be “wise” or “foolish?” (It is their cult leaders teachings.)

What is my basis for what is “wise” or “foolish?” (It is not my heart and head, for I am often inconsistent and wrong. It is not what some religious leader or cult leader teaches. For me, my truth-foundation is the Bible. It tells me that which God thinks is “foolish and wrong” or “wise and righteous.”)

And, you are right. When I look at what my Bible tells me is good and proper, I cannot do it. I am sinful. I am errant. I am imperfect. I am inconsistent. That’s when I look at what else my Bible tells me — there is hope, forgiveness, and help for sinful people like me.

Thank you my friend for writing. I hope I have been kind and “wise” in my response.

      Joe
