In our Scripture reading for today, we are instructed to read Deuteronomy 24-25. Within these and the surrounding chapters, many “Miscellaneous Laws” are presented, and they cover a wide array of topics. God legislates slavery, employment, ethical business practices, wages, human resource management, interest, loans, collateral, and fair financing. He also governs marriage, divorce, remarriage, and family planning. Moses then presents God’s will regarding judicial conduct and just sentencing. Environmental stewardship and infectious disease control are then covered before he transitions to discuss worship in the church. From the board room, to the court room, to the bedroom, to the house of worship, it appears the Lord has something to say about everything. For the Christ-follower, there is nothing completely secular. As one seeks to follow Christ, nothing is insignificant.
This concept is nothing new to the Christian community. Consider the following quote from Abraham Kupyer:
The Son is not to be excluded from anything. You cannot point to any natural realm or star or comet or even descend into the depth of the earth, but it is related to Christ, not in some unimportant tangential way, but directly. There is no force in nature, no laws that control those forces that do not have their origin in that eternal Word. For this reasons, it is totally false to restrict Christ to spiritual affairs and to assert there is no point of contact between him and the natural sciences. (Quoted in Lord of All, Kennedy & Newcombe)
Or consider the words of Francis Schaeffer:
True spirituality covers all of reality. There are things the Bible tells us to do as absolutes which are sinful- which do not conform to the character of God. But aside from these things the Lordship of Christ covers all of life and all of life equally. It is not only that true spirituality covers all of life, but it covers all parts of the spectrum of life equally. In this sense there is nothing concerning reality that is not spiritual. (A Christian Manifesto)
However, these men borrowed this theological position from Scripture. Perhaps Paul stated it most succinctly:
Whether you eat, drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Therefore friends, are we guilty of separating our Christian worship from any of our activities? From the moment we awaken, to the time we retire for the day, we are to be praying without ceasing. We are to consider Christ in the way we make coffee, make money, and make love. Whether conversing with our minister, unbelieving neighbor, employer, employee, spouse, children, IRS agent, telemarketer, or even Charter Communications, we are to use words “seasoned with salt.” Today, we are to love him with all our heart, soul and strength. Today, we are to deny ourselves, pick up our cross, and follow him. Today, all that we do is to bring glory to Christ. Today, nothing is insignificant. For us, everything is worship.
