My One Thing

What do I need most today?

Notice, I am not asking, “What would I like to have today?“ From world-peace to a piece of cheesecake, my wishlist could fill a notebook.

No, the question at hand is, “What do I need most today?”

I think I know.

Paul writes, “I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe ….” (Ephesians 1:16-19)

I need what Paul says I need.

I need that which Paul, and others, including Jesus, is praying for me today to experience.

I need God to affect my head. I need a deeper knowledge of Him.

I need God to affect my heart. The “eyes” of my heart need to be opened. My affections, emotions, and volition needs to be stirred up.

And when God answers this prayer with a “yes,” I will have more hope in …

  • What God has done for me in the past.
  • What God has for me in the future.
  • What God is doing to me, in me, around me, through me, and for me in the present.

Yes, the one thing I need is to be affected in mind and heart that I might experience more hope.

Therefore, for this one thing I am going to pray all the day. I can’t work this up. God is going to have to come through.

And, for my struggling friends — and you know who you are — this is what I am praying for you.

Come on Lord! Help me, my brothers, and my sisters. Affect us good! Affect us now! We long to walk in hope.
