Proverbs 12:23 A prudent man conceals knowledge, but the heart of fools proclaims folly.

In this simple verse, two individuals are presented and contrasted.

The prudent man has knowledge. He has observed, listened, and learned. This fellow, he has accumulated a good grasp of the facts. He is bright.

The prudent man, he also finds it unnecessary to constantly share the truth he has acquired. He is not always talking, pontificating, critiquing, waxing eloquent, debating, or teaching. No, he is slow to speak and doesn’t always need to be heard. He is not impressed with the sound of his voice. Instead of always engaging in diatribes, lectures, or sermons, he often controls his tongue and conceals his knowledge.

Ouch!

In contrast, the fool, he has a heart and mind filled with folly. He is not so learned and bright.

Worse yet, this fool continually talks and spews forth his ignorance.

Ouch! Ouch!

It was my father who often said to me, “Son, it is better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!

Perhaps I can better worship God and better love my neighbors by learning more while speaking less. I think my father, my wife, my children, and my church family would agree. I think my always gracious Savior is smiling as I write this devotional. If I listen carefully, I think I hear him clapping.

Hey friends, could the same be true for you?
