What of the Holy Spirit?

VII.  What is the Role of the Holy Spirit?

I believe there have been two primary errors in the church regarding the Holy Spirit

Many in the church have undervalued the necessity of the Holy Spirit

This is especially true in our Presbyterian and Reformed and cerebral churches.
Did you know that in the Westminster Confession of Faith, there is not one chapter that treats specifically this topic?
We look at the Charismatic movement and we run from it as fast as we can, and sadly, that includes throwing out the baby with the bathwater.
If undervaluing was the first error I would mention tonight, what do you think is the next error?  Many may so overvaluing, but that is not correct.  I do not think we can say men can focus too much on the Holy Spirit, for one cannot focus too much on God.    Rather, their next error made by many in the church is the following …

Many in the church have understudied the person and work of the Holy Spirit

This is the error made passively by many in the Charismatic movement as well as in several other denominations.
The Charismatic church is largely a response against “dead orthodoxy.”
The Charismatic movement sought out a powerful church.
The Charismatic movement sought out a vibrant and alive personal relationship with God.
The Charismatic movement then developed a theology and practice around the Holy Spirit.
Their focus on the Holy Spirit is great, but their doctrine of the Holy Spirit and His activity is wanting.
These charismatic churches will tell you that you must be “baptized in the Spirit.”
They will tell you that you have not reached the fuller stages of grace until you “speak in tongues” or have other evidence of being Spirit-filled.
However, their experiences and doctrine is relatively new – much of it began on Asuza street in 1906.

Therefore, I am seeking to correct both of those errors in our lives, at least for a while.

I want you to leave here with a more correct doctrinal understanding of the Holy Spirit.
I want you to leave here vitally impressed with the power of the Holy Spirit and your daily need for His assistance in your life.
What are the roles or work of the Holy Spirit?

A.  The Holy Spirit Creates

Genesis 1:2  Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Luke 1:35  The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

Job 33:4  The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

Psalm 104:30  When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

B.  The Holy Spirit Teaches

Psalm 143:10  Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

Nehemiah 9:20 You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst.

Isaiah 48:16  Come near me and listen to this: “From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret; at the time it happens, I am there.” And now the Sovereign LORD has sent me, with his Spirit.

Proverbs 1:23 Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my Spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.

John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 16:14  He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.     [Notice how the Spirit glorifies Jesus Christ.  He does so through taking the truth of Jesus Christ and declaring it to men.]

John 15:26  When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

1 Corinthians 2:12-14  We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us … The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Galatians 4:6  Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

2 Peter 1:21  For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

1 John 2:20, 27  But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth … As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you.  But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit– just as it has taught you, remain in him.

Revelation 2:7  He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

What is our hope and prayer on Sunday morning?

1 Corinthians 2:4-5  My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.

C.  The Holy Spirit Convicts

Genesis 6:3  Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

Psalm 51:10-12  Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.  Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.  Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

John 16:7-8  But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.  When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:   [Keep in mind that conviction and regeneration are two different things]

Acts 7:51  You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!

By the way, this is the unforgivable sin: “Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.”  He said this because they were saying, “He has an evil spirit.”  (Mark 3:29-30; Matt. 12:31-32)

Hebrews 10:28-29  Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.  How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

D.  The Holy Spirit Recreates

You could also say the Holy Spirit regenerates.

The judges prophesied regarding the wrath and judgment of the Lord.  But when they promised restoration and reconciliation with God, they used the phrase “God will no longer hide his face … He will pour out His Spirit.”  For example, take Ezekiel 39:29, “I will no longer hide my face from them, for I will pour out my Spirit on the house of Israel, declares the Sovereign LORD.”

Ezekiel 37:9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath (Holy Spirit); prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, that they may live.'” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet– a vast army. 11 Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’ 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: O my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. 14 I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the LORD have spoken, and I have done it, declares the LORD.'”

John 3:6, 8 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit … The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”  (Unpredictable)

John 6:44  No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.

Acts 15:7-9  After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.  God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.  He made no distinction between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith.

Titus 3:5  … He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.

E.  The Holy Spirit Comforts

You could also say that the Holy Spirit assures.

Haggai 2:5  This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.

John 14:16-20  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.  Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

The Greek word used is parakletos.  This is one who comforts, one who strengthens, one who is an advocate or a defense attorney, a right-arm aid.

Romans 8:16  The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Ephesians 4:30  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.   (Assurance may be diminished when the Spirit is grieved.)

F.  The Holy Spirit Sanctifies

Matthew 3:16-17  As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.  And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

1 Corinthians 3:16-17  Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?  If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.  (Also 6:19)

Galatians 5:17-25 … The sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want.  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.  The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. … Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Romans 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

The Holy Spirit sanctifies our prayers:

Romans 8:26  In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

G.  The Holy Spirit Empowers

Luke 4:18-21  “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”  Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Jesus Christ was given the Spirit “without measure” or “without limit.”  (John 3:34)

Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

Matthew 28:18-20  Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Acts 1:5-8  “… for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when they met together, they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”  He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 2

Acts 6:3 Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them.  (Deacons)

Acts 20:28  Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

Acts 10:37-38  You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached–how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 13  There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.  There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.  There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.  Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good … For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body– whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free– and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

1 Corinthians 12:8-10; 1 Corinthians 12:29-30; Romans 12:6-8; Ephesians 4:11      Gifts of the Spirit … active and inactive.

H.  The Holy Spirit Resurrects

Ephesians 1:13-14  And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession– to the praise of his glory.

1 Peter 3:18  For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit,

Romans 8:11  And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

What about the Holy Spirit?

THE HOLY SPIRIT

  1. WE NEED TO KNOW THE HOLY SPIRIT

IN THE BEGINNING THE HOLY SPIRIT COMMUNED WITH THE FATHER AND SON AS GOD

God is the same – yesterday, today, and forever.

God is eternal.

God is unchangeable

IN THE BEGINNING THE HOLY SPIRIT COVENANTED WITH THE FATHER AND SON

This is called the Covenant of Redemption

The Holy Father has already chosen to leave the Unclean Spirit – Lucifer – in his rebellious, fallen and deplorable condition.

The Holy Father has already chosen to leave the unclean spirits – demons – in their hellish condition as well.

The Holy Father could choose to leave all those with unclean spirits – children of Adam – in their sinful state.

The Holy Father could choose to treat all sinners with justice, fairness and equity.

The Holy Father decides not to treat all men with justice, but to deliver grace to some.

The Holy Father sends the Son to kill him.

The Holy Father declares just (justification) those who place their faith in the Sacrificial Lamb.

The Holy Son goes willingly, lovingly, and eagerly.

The Holy Son adds a human nature.

The Holy Son is given the Spirit “without measure” or “without limit.”  (John 3:34)

The Holy Son lives a perfect life.

The Holy Son self-sacrifices and delivers a substitutionary death.

The Holy Son rises from the grave.

The Holy Son promises the greatest of all gifts – the Holy Spirit  — In a way that far surpassed the OT norm.

The Holy Son commissions his disciples.

The Holy Son ascended to heaven where he presently watches and rules.

The Holy Spirit convicts all men.

The Holy Spirit troubled all men.

IN THE BEGINNING THE HOLY SPIRIT CREATED THE WORLD WITH THE FATHER AND SON

IN THE BEGINNING THE HOLY SPIRIT HOVERED OVER THE WORLD

God spoke the world into existence.

God intentionally left the universe, for some period of time, a formless and empty state.

God intentionally left the universe, for some period of time, in darkness.

God intentionally left the Holy Spirit hovering over the waters.

IN THE BEGINNING, THE HOLY SPIRIT WATCHED

God began to make something spectacular out of the formless, empty and dark.

God breathed, spoke and created light.

God breathed, spoke and created the stars and planets.

God breathed, spoke and created the land and sea.

God breathed, spoke and created the birds, animals and fish.

IN THE BEGINNING, THE HOLY SPIRIT ENTERED THE FIRST COUPLE

God then did something unique or different.      (Perhaps the work of the Preincarnate Son who walked in the Garden)

God stooped and put dust in his hand.

God created the man out of the dust.

God breathes a soul – eternal existence, moral awareness, divine consciousness – into Adam.

I believe that Adam and Eve had God the Father watching above.

I believe that Adam and Eve had God the Son walking beside.

I believe that Adam and Eve had God the Spirit dwelling within.  (Compare with Jesus in John 20:22)

IN THE BEGINNING, ADAM AND EVE ENJOYED SWEET COMMUNION WITH GOD.

There was doxological intimacy.

There was no guilt.

There was peace.

There was reverence but no fear.

IN THE BEGINNING, ADAM AND EVE ENJOYED SWEET COMMUNION WITH ONE ANOTHER.

There was no selfishness.

There was no strife.

There was only love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, self-control.

There was perfect relational harmony.

ADAM AND EVE ENJOYED CONDITIONAL COMMUNION WITH GOD AND ONE ANOTHER

would enjoy this situation forever as long as God was not disobeyed

This was the ideal and perfect; this was paradise.

This was conditional.     (Covenant of Works)

ADAM AND EVE GRIEVED THE HOLY SPIRIT

Then came the intersection with Lucifer

Lucifer gave the couple his counsel.

Lucifer tempted the couple.                              (At this point, the couple is still sinless, for to be tempted is not sin.)

Surely, Eve grieved the Spirit when she considered the contrary truth claims of the visitor.

Surely, Eve grieved the Spirit she did not call out for God in prayer?

Surely, Eve grieved the Spirit when they doubted the goodness of God.

Surely, Adam grieved the Spirit when sat by in passivity?

Absolutely, Adam and Eve grieved the Spirit when they partook of the forbidden fruit.

ADAM AND EVE LOST THE HOLY SPIRIT

Adam and Eve still had eternal existence.

Adam and Eve still had a moral awareness.

Adam and Eve still had a divine consciousness.

Adam and Eve no longer had sweet communion with God.

Adam and Eve no longer had sweet communion, one with the other.      (Evidenced by the blaming of God and spouse)

Adam and Eve now lack love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.

Adam and Eve notice something is terribly wrong.

Adam and Eve self-medicate.                                                     (This is a picture of worldly religion)

Adam and Eve hide.

Adam and Eve have unclean spirits.

Adam and Eve are led by the Unclean Spirit.

Adam and Eve will bear children and fill the world with unclean spirits lead by the Unclean Spirit.

ADAM AND EVE’S CHILDREN AND WORLD LOST THE HOLY SPIRIT

You are the sinful and rebellious descendents of Adam.

You are following the unclean spirit that is found within your chest.

You are following the Unclean Spirit – Lucifer.                                         (Father the Devil; Saul; Judas)

You lack love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.

You are not at peace with God.

You are not at peace with mankind.

You are not at peace with yourself.

Genesis 6:5–6      The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.

THE HOLY FATHER DETERMINED TO EXERCISE SOVEREIGN MONERGEISTIC GRACE

THE HOLY SON DETERMINED TO EXERCISE SOVEREIGN MONERGISTIC GRACE

THE HOLY SPIRIT DETERMINED TO EXERCISE SOVEREIGN MONERGISTIC GRACE

THE HOLY SPIRIT REGENERATES

The Holy Spirit convicts all men.

The Holy Spirit troubled all men.

Men receive the General Calling of God in nature.

Men receive the General Calling of God in their consciousness.

Men receive the Special Calling of God in numerous fashion.

Men reject the General and Special Calling of God.

Men resist the General and Special Calling of God.                                 (This is not what we mean by “Irresistible Grace”)

Acts 7:51     You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!

It is here that the Holy Spirit gives some people a new set of eyes.

It is here that the Holy Spirit gives some people a new set of ears.

It is here that the Holy Spirit gives some people a new head.

It is here that the Holy Spirit gives some people a new heart.

Ezekiel 37:9–14     Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army. 11 Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’ 12 Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. 13 And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. 14 And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the LORD.”

John 3:6, 8     Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit … The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

John 6:44     No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 16:7-8     But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.  When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

1 Corinthians 2:12-14     We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us … The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Titus 3:5     He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.

Aren’t you glad the Holy Spirit is persistent?

Aren’t you glad the Holy Spirit is irresistible to some?                             (Effectual grace is a preferred term)

THE HOLY SPIRIT INDWELLS

In the Old Covenant of Grace; the Holy Spirit dwelt on the Special Mountain.

In the Old Covenant of Grace, the Holy Spirit dwelt in the Holy of Holies found in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple.

In the Old Covenant of Grace; the Holy Spirit regenerated the true worshipers of Christ.

In the Old Covenant of Grace; the Holy Spirit temporarily fell upon people ; sometimes these people became apostate.

In the Old Covenant of Grace; the Holy Spirit stayed with some.

In the Old Covenant of Grace, the Holy Spirit departed for a time.

In the New Covenant of Grace, the Holy Spirit moves in a better way than with Adam; never to leave.

John 14:16-20     And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.  …

The Holy Spirit fell on the Church of Jerusalem     (Acts 2:1-11; 4:31)

The Holy Spirit then moved on to affect the Church of Samaria     (Acts 8)

Following this we next see the Holy Spirit’s filling at the Church of Caesarea     (Acts 10)

Then Ephesus and Corinth, and the list of Spirit-filled churches goes on and on.      (Acts 19; 1 Corinthians)

Every single church received a filling from the Holy Spirit.

Every single church received Spirit anointed and appointed elders and deacons to love and lead.      (Acts 6; 20:28)

Every single church received Spirit anointed and filled lay-people with various gifts to encourage, strengthen and serve.   (1 Corinthians 12:4-13)

Every single Christian, without exception, was regenerated and indwelt by the Holy Spirit     (1 Cor. 2:12-14; 3:16-17; Gal. 4:4-6; 5:22-23; Eph. 1:13-14; Titus 3:4-7)

1 Corinthians 3:16-17     Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?  If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.

1 Corinthians 6:19     Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? …

Romans 8:9     You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

Galatians 4:4-6     But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”

Ephesians 1:13-14     In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

The Holy Spirit fills his people.

The Holy Spirit communes in his people.

The Holy Spirit fellowships with his people.

There is no unbeliever who has the Holy Spirit.

There is no believer who has not the Holy Spirit.

THE HOLY SPIRIT UNITES IN FELLOWSHIP

Communion of Saints

Ephesians 4:1–3     I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

THE HOLY SPIRIT GIFTS AND EMPOWERS

The Holy Spirit came upon priests in the Old Covenant of Grace and set them apart for special ministry.

The Spirit was upon, clothed, stirred, rushed upon …

Artisans were filled by the Spirit in order to construct the gorgeous art to be found about the tabernacle and the temple

Musicians were filled by the Spirit in order to offer their talents to the Lord and his people

Priests were filled by the Spirit in order to properly lead God’s people in God’s worship.

Prophets were filled by the Spirit in order to receive and communicate the very words of the Almighty God.

Kings were filled by the Spirit in order to lead and govern God’s people in their everyday lives.

The Holy Spirit came upon Jesus in the New Covenant of Grace and set them apart for special ministry.

The Holy Spirit came upon Jesus’ followers in the New Covenant of Grace and set them apart for special office.

Luke 24:49     I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

John 15:26     When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

Acts 20:28     Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.

The Holy Spirit came upon Jesus’ followers in the New Covenant of Grace and set them apart for special ministry.

1 Corinthians 12:4–13     Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

THE HOLY SPIRIT SANCTIFIES

Discipleship

Discipline

Galatians 5:17-25     … The sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit (desires) what is contrary to the sinful nature. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. … Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

2 Timothy 1:7     For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

THE HOLY SPIRIT INSTRUCTS

Proverbs 1:23     Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my Spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.

Psalm 143:10     Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

Nehemiah 9:20    You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst.

John 14:26     But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 16:14     He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

Acts 6:3    Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them.  (Deacons)

1 Corinthians 2:12-14    Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

2 Peter 1:21     For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

1 John 2:20     But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge ….

THE HOLY SPIRIT SEALS

Preserving

Resurrecting

Ephesians 1:13-14     And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession– to the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 4:29-31     Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

2 Corinthians 1:22     And who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

2 Corinthians 5:5     He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

Romans 8:11     And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

THE HOLY SPIRIT ASSURES

Galatians 4:6     Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.”

Romans 8:15-16     For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”   The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

  1. WE NEED TO GROW BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

THERE ARE SYNERGISTIC WORKS BETWEEN GOD AND MAN

Faith is a synergistic work of God and man

Repentance is a synergistic work of God and man

Sanctification is a synergistic work of God

Sanctification is a Joint Venture

Sanctification is a relational endeavor

Sanctification requires human attention

Sanctification requires human effort

Illustration: God provides the boat, the wind, and the current; Man must use the oars or raise and point the sails.

Illustration: God provides the gym, the weights, the trainer, the nutritional supplement; Man must go to work.

Puritan Richard Sibbes wrote, “There is no one in the world so great and sweet a friend who will do us so much good as the Spirit, if we give him entertainment.”

Galatians 5:17-25     … The sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit (desires) what is contrary to the sinful nature. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. … Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

Ephesians 5:15-21     Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

1 Timothy 4:14     Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you.

2 Timothy 1:6-7     For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

1 Thessalonians 5:11-19     Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 12 We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. 15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit.

SERMON TEXTS:

Genesis 6:5–6      The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.

Psalm 78:13-41     He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap. 14 In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light. 15 He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep. 16 He made streams come out of the rock and caused waters to flow down like rivers. 17 Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert. 18 They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved. 19 They spoke against God, saying, “Can God spread a table in the wilderness? 20 He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?” 21 Therefore, when the LORD heard, he was full of wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob; his anger rose against Israel, 22 because they did not believe in God and did not trust his saving power. 23 Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven, 24 and he rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven. 25 Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance. 26 He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens, and by his power he led out the south wind; 27 he rained meat on them like dust, winged birds like the sand of the seas; 28 he let them fall in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings. 29 And they ate and were well filled, for he gave them what they craved. 30 But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths, 31 the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel. 32 In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe. 33 So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror. 34 When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly. 35 They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer. 36 But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues. 37 Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant. 38 Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath. 39 He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again. 40 How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert! 41 They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

Ephesians 4:30     And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
